The Crown Locking Cap.

There are, at the pieselLt time, several designs of lock-nuts on the market which are finding favour, as a means of fastening, amongst commercial-vehicle manufacturers. We have described the construction of a number of these on this page in past issues. A new and original design of locking device which has recently been brought to our notice is that marketed by the Crown Locking Cap Co. 1, Bank Chambers, Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham. Our illustrations reproduced herewith will give a good idea of the general form of this lockingcap as it is called. Three line illustrations are included, the first, showing the cap ready to fit on the bolt and nut, the second shows the nut tightened down ready to receive the cap. It will be noticed that the bolt has been cut to take the beam of the cap. The third illustration shows the cap being forced over the nut The spring tongue pieces become expanded during this operation, as they .are internally of smaller diameter than the bolt, with the result that the cap arms are forced to ratchet themselves down the thread of the bolt.,

When the cap is secured on the nut, the tendency to close together, in the threads holds the cap from

rising longitudinally from the nut. The cap locks positively, .without tightening the nut fully, so that the bolt can be left a working fit where necessary.

The cap is made of spring teel of suitable weight, and it is properly tempered. The caps can be obtained in any sizes ; if millimetre sizes are specified they can be supplied. The makers will reinforce the beam of the cap to any strength desired.

A point worthy of note is that the cap can be readily removed by means of an expander supplied by the company or by the use of a screw-driver or like tool for that matter.

Repairs by the New Welding Co.

In our last issue on this page we referred to the fact that considerable progress was being made in thee-d irection of increased efficiency in an important branch of industry closely, connected with general engineering Work. We pointed out that British welding firms were at the presenttime doing much good work in engineering shops wher. Machinery installa

e53 tion had been damaged or fractured as a consequence of continually working at full blast. It is obviously impossible to dispense with machines .which become damaged, bearing in mind the demand for war material, so that it is important to have damaged plant repaired by a proven welding process.

The New Welding Co., of 241, Rosebery Avenue,, London, E.C..is one of the British concerns which is at the present time busily engaged in effecting repairs to many classes of machine installation. They opecialize to a. great extent on the repair of aluminium parts, but, of course, their activities are by no means confined to this class of work ; in fact, they are prepared to carry out any kind of repair to castiron, steel, or any other metal.

The concern is constantly repairing aluminium crankcases, and they claim that their process lends itself particularly to work of this sort. The strength_ and efficiency of the casting when repaired is equal to that of the original casting. Such defects as distortion of the metal and inaccurate machining are carefully avoided. An important feature of the New Welding Co.'s process is the low cost at which the repair can be effected as compared with the cost of a replacement. A generous guarantee is given when work is undertaken. Further particulars and quotations for proposed repairs can be obtained from the address of the company given ahove.
