The managing director of Transline Logistics, a firm which was granted a UK licence after claiming it had used another haulier's 0-licence in ignorance, has now admitted sending vehicles to the Continent.

West Midland Traffic Commissioner David Dixon told managing director Anthony Shaw that he could not pick and

choose which bits of the licensing system to follow for commercial reasons. The Walsall-based company appeared at a public inquiry after applying to increase the authorisation From eight vehicles and two trailers to 1 2 vehicles and three trailers.

Dixon said he was proposing suspending part of the fleet— how much by depended on enquiries he proposed making of a traffic examiner who had been unable to attend the public inquiry because of ill health. The TC had received a letter from a Stephen Bradbury, who claimed Shaw had asked if he could use his 0-licence and had taken a photocopy of it. This was emphatically denied by Shaw, who said Bradbury's own haulage lousiness had failed, and he had come looking for work with a small van. He main tained that Bradbury had offered him the use of the licence when he had said he wanted to move into larger vehicles, producing a copy from his bag. Dixon said he was inclined to accept Shaw's version of events. Bradbury had been invited to attend the proceedings, but had not done so.

Asked about the contents of on anonymous letter, Shaw admitted sending 7.5-tonne vehicles to the Continent on six occasions. Shaw said he had to do it as he had not wanted to lose the contract and put employees' jobs in jeopardy. Dixon adjourned consideration of disciplinary action against the company's licence.
