Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Ni John Kendall's article on trailer axle alignment (Hold The Line, CM 15-21 Oct), raised an interesting subject that is all too often ignored by fleet operators. Quite rightly, the additional costs of increased fuel consumption from misaligned axles are analysed in some detail but the significant effects of accelerated tyre wear are hardly given a mention. Based on the example quoted, namely a tri-axle trailer with 100mm offset axles in opposite directions, the additional cost of increased tyre wear for a trailer covering 120,000km per year would be in the region of £624. This is calculated on a pence per kilometre (ppk) cost of 1.58p for a correctly aligned trailer, compared with a pa of 2.10p for the misaligned example.

Apart from the costly reduction in trailer tyre life, extra tyre wear also occurs on tractor unit tyres due to the driver having to compensate for the crabbing effect from the trailer.

Overall this picture must account for hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of wasted tyre life each year, a preventable • cost for the haulage industry. Mike Swain Central Tyre Technical Services, Burton on Trent.
