• About 40 Derbyshire-based owner-drivers' livelihoods are hanging in the balance following a warning from Tarmac Quarry Products that it will cut production at its Middle Peak Quarry by nearly 70% by the end of the year.
TQP says it will need some drivers for its neighbouring Dene Quarry where it will step up dry stone quarrying while Middle Peak is left to concentrate on blacktop materials, which amount to a third of the Wirksworth site's output.
Up to 30 non-driver jobs will also be lost at Middle Peak.
