Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LONDON TRANSPORT is expected to make a decision on the future of its Alden ham bus works on November 8.

This follows its statement that both Chiswick and Aldenham works are not viable, because of their high overheads and outdated work practices as well as a lower demand from the reduced bus fleet (CM, October 22). LT wants to transfer bus engineering into smaller industrial units.

The Greater London Council transport committee has urged LT to think again about the closures which it feels could reduce the number of servicable buses at "a crucial time for public transport in London."

It is also directing LT to increase bus mileage by 4m miles during 1984/85 although final GLC decisions on the LT threeyear plan will be taken later this year in the light of the Transport Secretary's guidance on expenditure limits which the Council is obliged to take into account.
