Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AROUND 115 lorry drivers are to be made redundant by Blue Circle Industries because of its investment and modernisation programme for 1984/85.

Thirty drivers have already been notified of their impending redundancies, while the remaining job losses will be negotiated with the relevant trade unions.

Thirty-four jobs are to go at the company's Hollborough works in Kent, and 10 at its Norman works near Cambridge. Five maintenance and repair depots are to be closed at Grangemouth in Scotland, Middlesbrough, Heaton in Newcastle, Exeter and Poole because of overmanning.

Blue Circle is Britain's largest cement manufacturer, but has recently experienced low demand for cement. In addition the company has changed its distribution patterns and invested in larger vehicles, a spokesman told CM.

With no upturn in demand predicted in the near future, it has had to reduce its vehicle fleet at maintenance repair depots at many of its works and depots around the country, resulting in the overmanning levels.

The company is to declare a further 465 redundancies in other sections of the company during 1984/85 to meet its modernisation programme.
