Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A simpler version of the Body-Change demountable system has been developed for special applications by Arlington Bodybuilders Ltd, High Road, Ponders End, Middx. Instead of using hydraulic lifting rams at both front and rear ends of the chassis, a single vertical ram is installed on the vehicle centre-line just behind the rear axle.

First application of the new design is for Nitrochill Ltd. of Alperton, Middx, distributor of liquid nitrogen, oxygen and argon. The tank, of 420ga1 capacity, is a vacuum insulated unit built in the United States by the Union Carbide Company. Its vacuum space contains layers of aluminium foil which minimize heat transfer through radiation as well as convection.

The 8ft-long, 4ft 6in.-diameter tank, with a steel outer shell, is supplied complete with four 1-in.-thick rubber mountings onto a steel sub-frame. Arlington has added runners—or skids—which have upward curving ends; they sit inside flanged rails bolted to the top of the Leyland Redline 550 FG chassis frame.

Square-section legs locate in sockets in the sub-frame. The total width of the unit outside the legs when it has been demounted is only 4ft 8in, — much less than would have been possible with existing demountable systems on a 7ft-wide chassis.

Demounting procedure involves removing the locking pins and jacking the rear of the tank high enough to insert the legs. The chassis then drives forward until stops on the body skids and the chassis rails make contact. The ram is then in line with the rear lifting point, a tapered recess built into the base structure of the tank. The front can then be raised and the forward legs positioned.

In transit the legs are simply held in their normal square sockets, 90deg out of line, the length of each leg being stowed horizon tally along the tanksi de.

A new Smiths Industries hydraulic power pack has been designed for the Arlington system. It is installed inside the FG cab on Nitrochill's vehicle. Apart from the .1 gal oil reservoir, the pack is built into the base of the passenger's seat. The tank is bolted to the narrow cab rear panel. A single control lever regulates the lifting and lowering operations.

Empty weight of the complete 9ft 6in. wheelbase vehicle is 3 tons 2 cwt, although for taxation purposes the chassis/base unit weighs only 2 tons lcwt.

It was required to get the width of a demounted Nitrochill tank as small as possible in order to minimize the ground area occupied on a customer's premises. Filled tanks are taken to the users—mainly hospitals or research establishments—where supplies of the liquefied gas can be drawn off when required.

It is proposed to incorporate a pressure gauge connection in the lifting ram feed line, which can be used as an indicator calibrated to show the tank contents to within 10 per cent accuracy.
