• A Bradford lorry driver who claimed that he had been chatting whilst making out his driver's hours records was fined a total of £26 at Bradford magistrates' court last week after he pleaded guilty to three offences relating to drivers' hours regulations.
Prosecuting for the Yorkshire LA, Mr A. E. Patterson said that the offences had been discovered at 7.50 pm in Sheffield on June 25 when a DoE vehicle examiner had seen the defendant, Mr Arthur C. Taylor, of Moorside Avenue, Bradford, driving a vehicle in the direction of Bradford. The examiner made a note of this and when Mr Taylor's record for that day was later checked it was found to state that he had commenced work at 8 am and finished at 7 pm, giving him the 10 hours maximum driving time.
In his evidence Mr Taylor said: "I must have made 'a mistake; I was chatting to a friend when I filled in my log sheet."
For exceeding the 10 hours driving limit Mr Taylor was fined £10, for being on duty more than the permitted 11 hours he was also fined £10 and for failing to keep a current record he was fined £6. Permission was given for the fine to be paid off at £2 per week.
