• The TGWU has complained to the Army Northern Command that bus operators carrying personnel to Longtown central ammunition depot, Cumberland, are not paying the same wages to busmen as the previous operators. Until early in October the services were operated by Western SMT, who withdrew on the grounds that they were no longer economic. The Army afterwards invited tenders from 10 bus firms and decided that the services should be shared between Blair and Palmer Ltd Carlisle, Palmer of Carlisle, and Blue Band Motors, Lockerhie, who submitted the lowest tenders. The union's complaint is being considered by Northern Command hq at York.
• Durham City council has decided to provide cheap bus fares for old people. The con-cession will cost £11,000 annually. representing £4.50p for each pensioner. The scheme will start early next year. Stockton-on-Tees rural council is to grant cheap fare tokens to old people for use on either Teesside Corporation or United Automobile Services buses.
