Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• On Monday driver Charlie Wise, from Camberwell, set off from London for a singlehanded drive of 4076 miles through eight countries to Kuwait with a load of McVitie's Swiss rolls worth £3,600.

This pilot run, aimed at finding an economic way of satisfying the Kuwaitis' appetite for the Swiss rolls made by United Biscuits group, is being undertaken by Union Cartage Co Ltd, of Brentwood, Essex, and the consignment of 78,000 rolls (eight miles of them) was loaded at the Union Cold Store, Acton.

The special outfit for the job comprises a Scania LBT 110 double-drive turbocharged tractive unit coupled to a 12-metre Crane Fruehauf/Bonallack semi-trailer of about 20 tons capacity. A Petter refrigeration unit will maintain load temperature at — 5deg F to — 10deg F.

Estimated time for the trip is 14 days — compared with a month by sea — and the transport cost is about half the sea figure. The shelf-life of the goods will be undiminished, thanks to the refrigerated trailer, and UB sees an additional advantage in having the load under the constant supervision of the driver. The value of this aspect may be judged from the fact that Charlie Wise, who has been with Union Cartage for 23 years, is a fully qualified vehicle maintenance and refrigeration engineer as well as an extremely experienced driver.
