THE application of new ideas is the keynote of the latest products of vehicle accessory manufacturers. Delaney Gallay, Ltd., Vulcan Works, Edgware Road, London, N.W.2, have used in the design of their new Sand G-type heaters the experience they have gained in the field of aircraft gas turbines. The fans of these units are of the axial-flow type, the pitch of the blades being greater at the root than

at the tip. . , This arrangement makes for greater efficiency and the fan can revolve at a lower speed than would be necessary with the usual fan for a given pressure of air to develop. The most noticeable advantage of the bower speed of the motor is quietness.

The S type is 8 in. long, 6i in. deep and 6 in. wide, and has a main outlet at the front 41 in. by I+ in. and two side outlets each Ji in. square. There are also two circular outlets of 11-in.

bore for demisters. Air is directed through them from the fan by means of special volutes.

Three-position Switch

As a recirculatory heater, warming air already in the vehicle, the maximum output is equivalent to li kW. Approximately half this output may be obtained by appropriate selection by the three-position switch. With an adaptor for the inductance of fresh air from the outside, the maximum output is 2 kW.

Two pipes of fin, bore are connected to the copper radiator matrix, which consists of vertical tubes with continuous horizontal gills. Price of the S-type heater, with installation kit, is £9 19s. 6d The G type is supplied at the same price but without kit. It is adaptable for cab or ambulance heating, underseat installation in coaches or as a demister unit. Slightly larger than the S type, its .output is 21 kW." It may be mounted in any position as the armature of the motor runs in self-aligning bearings.

A windscreen washer of simple design and actuated by a manual plunger is available from Tudor Accessories, Ltd., Beaconsfield Road, Hayes, Middx. The container for the solution is made of a flexible and tough plastic material, and from this run two pipes to the spraying nozzles.

Nozzles, each with two orifices, are available for large windscreens, one jet being arranged to play higher than the other. The price of the model for commercial vehicles is El 13s.

Fitting time is greatly reduced by Simpla glazing rubber, a recently introduced product of Hallam, Sleigh and Cheston, Ltd., Bagot Street, Birmingham, 4. No separate filler bead is required. The rubber is first placed round the body aperture, the glass inserted, and a tool is run round to secure part of the rubber section under a lip to lock the fixture.

A small window for the side of a coach driver's cab is a new product of AuSter, Ltd., Barford Street, Birmingham, 5. Two panes open in jack-knife fashion either sufficient for a driver to put his arm out for signalling, or to allow him to look to the rear.

In the fully open and shut positions the actuating mechanism is locked over the centre.

Finer Adjustment

This company now offer geared operation for their double-deflecting ventilators, which were formerly lever actuated. Screw mechanism is controlled either by a knob or a crank and a finer degree of adjustment is obtainable.

Young Windows, Ltd., Wishaw, Lanarks, now have a version of their balanced half-drop window with the upper corners radiused. The balancing mechanism is contained in the crosspiece, a static fixture, whereas formerly. it was at the top of the sliding partition.

A new feature is that the rack is made of nylon and thus requires no lubrication, besides being quiet in operation. Freedom from rattle is given by a seating of felt against a knife-edged metal section, and in the event of damage a panel may be quickly replaced as the frame is split at the centre. A destination-indicator gear which weighs only 2 lb. 14 oz. has been produced by Transport Engineering and Equipment, Ltd., Willow Lane, Lancaster. The boxes are light-alloy die-castings and the shaft, which is larger than formerly employed, runs in Oilite bushes. The price is only slightly more than that of the standard model, which weighs 3 lb. 1 oz.

Seats suitable for some types of export bus are being offered by G. 1). Peters and Co., Ltd., Windsor Works, Slough. They are formed of Pagwood, a wood-veneer laminated board, manufactured by patented process. Each veneer is impregnated with plastic and all are compressed together at great heat. The attractive natural appearance of wood is retained and high tensile strength is imparted. Light in weight, Pagwood seats are weatherproof and resistant to abrasion. They are highly suitable for use in the tropics.

Visual Inspection

The oil-cleaning element may be visually inspected with the Blue Filter, a Dutch product now being handled in this country by C. L. Equipments, Ltd., Merridale Road, Wolverhampton. The Blue Filter consisjs of a substantial metal cylinder with a cap which may be removed so that the cotton element can be inspected or replaced. There are two sizes, the B.F.1 for small-medium vehicles, and the B.F.2 for coaches and heavy lorries.

One of the lamp bulbs made by the Edison Swan Electric Co., Ltd., 155 Charing Cross Road, W.C.2, is a 24-v, 6-W. type with a double filament. Intended for rear lamps, it provides an extra measure of safety, in that should one filament burn out the other stays alight.

Any vehicle or equipment which is maintained on a time basis could benefit from an indicator showing the number of hours of operation under running conditions. Such. an indicator is being produced by Cass and Phillip Ltd., Mark Road, Adeyfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. In effect, it is an electrically driven clock which starts recording immediately the vehicle or machine to which it is fitted commences to operate.

In the case of a petrol-driven vehicle it is suggested that the indicator could be switched on and off by movement of the hand-brake lever and the control circuit by the ignition key.
