Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Some models will always sell well. In the car-derived van market,Astravans are currently making strong money. In fact, not including VAT, the Astravan is securing better prices than the equivalent Vauxhall cars on the open market.

ManheitnAuctions is now seeing the first Ford Transit Connects come to market and they are doing very well at auction, as is the 2-litre HDI Berlingo and the more powerful Renault Kangoos.

It's also becoming clear that side-loading doors on car-derived vans are having a strong influence on the market. Prices are reflecting the convenience of this feature on smaller vehicles.

Among the smaller panel vans the RenaultTrafic and Vauxhall Vivaro are no longer in their honeymoon period, but are still making very good money compared with the cost of new. In fact, the smaller panel van sector is the strongest in the marketplace at present.

Panels a/plenty VW Transporters and Mercedes Vitos are in short supply in any form of retail condition and the strong prices for good examples reflect this.

A high number of larger panel vans used for home delivery are emerging onto the market. The nature of the work means high mileage and wear and tear, which adversely affects the price,so Sprinter,Transit LWB High Top and Renault Masters are achieving weaker auction prices. But the value of good condition vehicles that haven't been used for multi-drops remains strong.

Toyota pickups proved the star of a recent auction Manheim Rotherham held for Toyota Financial Services.Twenty commercials were offered as part of a monthlyToyota Financial Services sale.

The Hilux continues its strong performance in the used market, with two 52 4x4 Double Cab models both making more than £9,700 despite having nearly 50,000 miles on the clock. The larger Dyna made one of its first appearances in the used market as a 52-plate 350M dropside. It made £6,000 with 26,800 miles on the clock.

On the vehicle front anything with really high mileage is struggling to find a home, but the ex-Royal Mail and gas company vans coming up for auction at the moment are providing great value Also good value is the Y/51plate ransit and Movano Drop ell Lutons, which are comMg back from a national furniteire retailer at around £6.000 (ex-VAT).

The last of the Ford Escort vans are just coming up for grabs and finding buyers, while ex-gas Be rli ngos and Kangoos are in ready supply. New shape shortwheelbase Transits are also in good supply at around the £5,750 mark, while the last of the old shape Transits are continuing to make good money.

Mitsubishi L200 pickups continue to make a fortune, even though prices have dropped over the past couple of months. Expect an 02 plated double cab to sell for £8-9,000 (ex-VAT).Tippers continue to be in short supply, but going forward we see the economy continuing to be kind to small companies and we reckon they will continue to help fuel growth in the used market as they expand their businesses.

The new black

The silver van conundrum rumbles on, with some making more and some making less at auction depending on the type of vehicle in question. Manheim's Market Analysis report shows that for car-derived vans under two years old, silver can add as much as £200 to the resale price. However, over that age the reverse can happen. As vehicles become more damaged, the cost implications of repairing silver paintwork hit home and t affect residual values.

The impact of colour is greater on panel vans because there's more bodywork to damage. Consequently, tatty fourto fiveyear-old vehicles in silver take a price hit. Silver is the worst possible colour for vehicles which suffer even higher wear and tear, such as tippers.

However, for small executive buses, such as the Transit Tourneo and the VW Caravelle,a metallic finish can add up to £500 in value when a vehicle goes under the hammer. •
