Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE UK ARM of Swedish truck maker Scania has embarrassed its environmentally conscious bosses in Sweden by landing a £15,000 fine for breaking recycling rules Scania GB was prosecuted before the Milton Keynes magistrates for six offences based on its failure to recycle packaging waste.

The firm's website boasts of its environmental policies: "Scania strives to minimise the environmental impact of its products, both during manufacture and use." One objective is to "reduce the amount of generated waste and residual products; Ito] strive for increased reuse and avoid waste disposal."

The company admitted six offences from 2002 and 2003 and asked the court to take into account its failure to comply for 2001-2002. Scania saved about 112,000 by not complying between 1998 to 2003.

Managers at Scania GB were unaware of their obligation until the Environment Agency (EA) contacted them in March 2004.

An EA spokeswoman says: It may have been an oversight on its part but all companies should be aware of their environmental responsibilities. Ignorance is no defence in law Tony Tomsett, Scania GB's general manager, technical and logistics, says: "Regrettably we found ourselves in this position simply through being unaware of the existence of the legislation. As a company with a long environmental tradition we naturally and fully support the aims of the act."
