A narrow village street in Leicestershire is being pounded by 3,000

trucks a week; now the villagers are revolting. Roger Bushby reports A QUARRY company has promised to finance road improvements after villagers claimed that over 3,000 lorries a week are ruining a leafy country lane.

Lafarge Aggregates says it will help pay for the cost of work on Gibbet Lane, in the Leicestershire village of Shawell, to cope with the 550 trucks that use it six days a week. Wheel-cleaning facilities will be installed at Shawell Quarry to safeguard grass verges and reduce the mess.

Villagers had complained to their local council that the number of sand and gravel trucks was increasing every time Lafarge submitted a planning application to extend its site.

"The worry is the volume of traffic," says parish council chairman,Frank Fisher, "Lorry traffic is creeping up every time a minor planning application is submitted. The lorries are causing damage to grass verges, and it is nearly impossible for other vehicles to pass along the lane." Lafarge's estates and planning manager, Tim Deal, says: "We will be paying half of the cost towards road improvements along the lane to make sure the verges are not damaged so the road can handle the traffic."

He adds that Lafarge is working closely with the county council and will not be increasing the number of runs, which are currently run ning at more than 3,000 a week.

Shawell Quarry covers 62 hectares. The county council is now carrying out a statutory review of the site to "ensure the conditions of the original application are kept up to date".
