Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• I write with reference to CPC — is it failing the grade? (CM 21-27 April). I passed the CPC Goods National in October 1987 first time. I agree with some of the comments made in the article, like "Mickey Mouse Memory Test" — especially as the tutor I went to had out-dated notes. I made my own intensive research through various channels, and phone calls to the traffic police, traffic area office, our own accountant, library, etc. I even sent to the Royal Society of Arts for example questions.

October 1987 was the first time the new format was used, and with one question in particular the answer wasn't even printed correctly, so everyone who sat the exam that day had the same problem. Although I had a set of example questions in my home, the tutor we had still set us the old mock exam papers, all through the 12 weeks of the course.

My husband, who is now an owner/driver and has been an HGV Class It driver for 14 years, kept saying that the whole thing is a farce, and in agreement with the article I took the exam because my husband did not have the time.

The tutor did not make it any easier, by using out-of-date films and materials (compared with what is published in CM). I'm not saying that he should have made it easier because I'm a woman, (I felt very intimidated because of that) but I feel sure that had I not done an awful lot of research myself, I would not have passed the exam.

My husband helped me with a percentage of the homework we were set each week, especially with GVW and axle weights. I also found, through my own research, several things that the tutor did not cover, which came up in the exam.

So maybe the tutors/teachers themselves should be brought more up-to-date. As having your own CPC is the only legal way to get your own haulage business, then I was only too pleased to have passed.

Now my husband and I have our own CPC and business, which I take quite an active part in. Things do not look as bleak as they did in April 1987.
