• A lorry driver who scribed traces on his tachograph charts with a pin and nail has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling 2350 by the Witham, Essex magistrates.
Norman Kedey of Kelveden admitted 13 offences of falsifying tachograph charts. He was fined £25 on each offence and ordered to pay 225 prosecution costs.
Prosecuting for the Eastern Traffic Area, Roger Wicks said that Kedey had falsified the charts to hide the fact that he was not taking sufficient daily rest. He had run with the head of his automatic tachograph open, joining up the traces with a pin and nail later in an attempt to show the required periods of rest. The charges before the court were only examples of the large number of offences discovered, which dated back to early last year.
In mitigation it was said that during the time Ketley committed the offences his brother had been dying of cancer and he had wanted to get home as quickly as possible at the end of each day's work.
