LA rejects Stockmell licence renewal bid

• A bid for a new licence, for 20 vehicles and two trailers, by Stockmen Transport (CM 2127 January) has been turned down by West Midland Deputy Licensing Authority Ronald Jackson.
At a public inquiry Jackson was told that the Coventrybased company had been heavily penalised by the Solihull magistrates for excise licence offences, unauthorised use and tachograph offences.
The total amount of fines, costs and back-duty had been reduced to £1,621.68 on appeal. Current turnover was in the region of 233,000 a month, all but two of the company's vehicles were paid for, and a judgement over a debt of 21,000, said to be owed to M J Haulage, had been met. A previous company, Stockmell Ltd, had gone into liquidation after two of its customers had gone bankrupt owing it 2,500 and a valuable contract had dried up.
Jackson adjourned the hearing for further financial information, and has now refused the application on the grounds that the information has not yet been produced,, despite the company being given several opportunities to do so. Without this he was not satisfied.
