Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MBODYING the Bedford 2-ton chassis, a .1.4 light fire-engine, at the moderate list price of £685, has just been announced by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Edgware Road, London, N.1V.9.

The engine is built to comply as nearly as possible with all fire-brigade requirements for which a pump delivering 250-300 gallons per minute would be of about the capacity needed. Optionally, with a 350-gallon pump the nriee is £740. The unit fitted is a Pulsometer three-stage turbine pump.

The turbine pump is equipped with three lengths of armoured suction hose, having brass couplings, copper strainer, etc., and the first-aid hose reel carries 120 ft. of hose, having a suitable nozzle, there being a 45-gallon tank and all the necessary fittings for coupling the tank to the pump and the pump to the hose reel. A feature is that the extra pump, of previous models, for operating the first-aid supply is eliminated in this new machine. In addition, it carries a 85-ft. three-piece extending escape ladder.

Included in the body equipment are large side boxes, rails and running boards, a fire bell, a single-piece safety-glass windscreen and brass fittings, also two Lucas paraffin side lamps and tail lamp. For controlling the power drive to the pump a throttle lever is fitted at the rear. Special arrangements are made to look after the cooling requirements of the engine during pump-driving duty.

At a recent demonstration, using a 11*-iu. nozzle, the water jet was made to reach nearly to the top of a 126-ft. tower,

the same result 'being obtained with two jt Is or four Fin. jets.

The road performance of the machine should be quite goad, for the overhead-valve six-cylindered engine of 26.33 11.1.L9 R.A.C. rating, is employed in conjunction with the standard four-speed gearbox, and a rear-axle ratio of 5.83 to 1. Fourwheel brakes are included in the specification, and •32-in:. by 6-in. tyres are fitted as standard.
