The Isle of Wight Services.

At present the time-table of Portsmouth, Southsea and Isle of Wight Aviation, Ltd., provides 13 departures daily in each direction between Portsmouth and Ryde, the trip taking eight minutes and the fare being 6s. single

and 10s. return. There are six departures each way between Portsmouth and Shanklin, the fares being respec

tively 10s. 6d. and 19s. 6d. Thrice daily a machine from Shanklin and Byde goes to Portsmouth and on to Shoreham (for Brighton and Worthing), the fares being 198. and 37s. There are six departures each way between Bycle and Shanklin.

Usefulness of Fry's 'Air Service.

The other day J. S. Fry and Sons, Ltd., Somerdale, Somerset, received an urgent order from India for a certain brand of cocoa, and, thanks' to the company's private air service, the goods were transhipped at Croydon into the Imperial liner " Hengist" within an hour of leaving Somerdale in the company's own machine.

The service was inaugurated some six months ago, the machine employed being a standard De Havilland Puss Moth, which carries a 4-cwt. load.

Death of Sir Geoffrey Salmond.

With regret we have to record the death of Air Chief Marshal Sir Geoffrey Salmond. On April 1 he succeeded his brother, Sir John Salmond, as Chief of the Air Staff, but illness prevented him from taking up his duties. He had a distinguished career, and played an outstanding part in the growth of the air arm in the 1914-18 war.

Hillman's Traffic Figures.

Messrs. Hillman's Airways, Bamford, advise us that the following numbers of passengers were carried in the week ended Sunday, April 30: On the Romford-Clacton line, 11 single journeys ; on the Romford-Margate line, 34 single journeys ; and on the Bomford-Paris line, 44 single journeys.

Hastings Aerodrome: The Latest Position.

An inquiry was held a few days ago into the application by Hastings Cor poration for a loan of £10,000 for the acquisition of an aerodrome site on Pebsham Estate, which is at the Bexhill end of Hastings. The land has been recommended by Sir Alan Cobham as the most suitable iu the area, although for permanent service it would be necessary to raise the level by means of dumping refuse, because there is a liability to flooding.

A Dragon on Tour.

The tour of a De Havilland Dragon twin-engined air liner, arranged by Brian Lewis and Co., Ltd., 30, Conduit Street, London, W.1, duly commenced last Sunday morning. Mr. C. Clarkson, who piloted, and his colleagues were given a hearty send-off at Heston Airport, several machines calling in to attend the take-off (which, by the way, took 1.5 seconds). A formation of Moths, with Capt. A. G. Lamplugh (British Aviation Insurance Co., Ltd.), Mrs. Ivor Cooper and others, Came over from Stag Lane and wished the party many sales and profitable landings. On

the concrete were Puss Moth, Monaspar, spar, Percival Gull and other useful commercial types.

Several demonstrations to road-transport operators and others had been fixed in advance.

A Paper on Municipal Aerodromes.

At the meeting of the Scottish Tramways and Transport Association, which is to .be held at the Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire, on May 25-27, Col. IL Dalton Henderson, of Perth Corporation transport department, is to read a paper on the subject of municipal aerodromes. Day Trips to Switzerland.

The scope which air travel affords for day trips to resorts abroad is graphically indicated, in the announcement ky Imperial Airways, Ltd., of an earlier morning service to Basle, as from June 1, which enables a day trip

to be made, with three hours Basle.

Escorted trips to Switzerland and other resorts are being offered this season on a bigger scale than last year.

Yarmouth Responding.

Yarmouth Corporation is considering a site 'at Gorleston for the provision of a municipal aerodrome. The town is in a good position for holiday traffic.

Bristol-Cardiff-Torquay Co-ordination.

It is 'reported that, within a few weeks, it may be possible to run the Bristol-Cardiff air service of Norman Edgar and -Co.; to connect regularly with the Cardiff, Teignmoutli and Torquay line operated by the Great Western Railway Co.

Inverness Aerodrome: Opening Postponed.

The official opening of the aerodrome at Inverness, which we have already announced as fixed for May 5 and 6, has been postponed to June 16 and 17. We have no advice, however, that the Inverness-Orkney service will not start on the day originally fixed, namely, May S.

Croydon: The Week's Figures.

In the week ended Wednesday. May 3, Continental air traffic into and out of Croydon airport totalled 1,552 passengers, 44.9 tons of freight, 27.6 tons ofpassengers' baggage, and 4.6 tons of mail,
