• Seat belt manufacturers Smiths Industries and Kangol have announced the formation of a joint company, Auto Restraint Systems Ltd. The new organization will co-ordinate the design, development and manufacture and marketing of occupant-restraint systems and also seat belt systems incorporating automatic audio-visual warning devices.
Auto Restraint Systems will not be concerned with Kangol's established static and reel type safety belts, which will continue to be handled by Kangol Magnet Ltd. Early in 1970 Kangol and Smiths Industries agreed jointly to study and investigate inflatable bag restraint systems; this research programme is continuing.
