• If a free public transport system, paid for out of the rates, was adopted in London, the average ratepayer whose day return ticket costs about 30p would save about £50 a year and married couples and families would gain even greater benefits. This is the gist of an article in the February issue of Barclays Bank Review, which adds: "Free public transport would be a considerable advance in the improvement of our quality. of life and environment, both of which are becoming of increasing importance to the general public."
