• There is a staggering number of withdrawal notices on rural bus services in Scotland at present, said Mr Jim Siliars (Labour, South Ayrshire) in the Commons last week.

He asked whether the Scottish Secretary, instead of doing anything to save these services, had chosen to shelter behind two pilot studies in Devon and West Suffolk, set up by an English Minister.

He was not sheltering behind anything, replied the Minister, Mr Gordon Campbell. This serious matter was receiving the Government's urgent attention. He travelled by bus a lot in the north of Scotland, apart from using other forms of transport, and he was aware of the usefulness of the rural bus services.
