MR. W. H. BISHOP. M.I.Mech.E., managing director of Weathershields, Ltd., will be installed on March 11 as chairman of the Midland centre committee of the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers. He is also a member of the council of the Federation of Vehicle Trades.

MR. G. F. K. MORGAN, M.C., F.C.A., has been re-elected chairman of the South ,Wales Area of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association (car hire and taxicab section). M. C. HOWARD PFHLLIPS continues as vice-chairman, MR. D. E. DAVIES, area secretary. reports ;hat membership is still increasing.

M. J. M. RUNDBAKEN, who recently retired from the position of general manager of Rootes, Ltd., Manchester, last week received a presentation from MR. GEORGE WHITE, of Henlys, Ltd., on behalf of his friends in the motor trade. Mr. Rundbaken has been directly connected with the motor industry for nearly 44 years.

M. FRANK C. MAY, A.M.I.M.I., has heti) appointed assistant general manager of Henley's Tyre and Rubber Co.. Ltd. He joined the company in 1919 and from 1923 to 1943 was manager of the Bristol branch. He then became personal assistant to the director and general manager, M. W. C. Gins.

• MR. RALPII CROPPER, B.A., A.M.INsr.T., has been awarded the Henry Spurrier Memorial Scholarship by the Institute of Transport, which will permit him to make an educational tour in the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Cropper is well known as secretary of many of the committees and groups of the National Road Transport Federation and the Road Haulage Association.

Sift ARTHUR JOHN GRIFFITHS SMOUT has been elected president of the Institute of Metals. Born in Birmingham in 1888, he was educated at King Edward's School there and the Technical College. In 1905 he joined the Elliott Group of metal companies as a student apprentice, becoming works manager of one of its companies in 1920, and in 1924 works manager of the group, which is now part of Imperial Chemical Industries. He joined the I.C.I. main board in 1944, and is a director of Magnesium Elektron, Ltd., Murex, Ltd., Murex Welding Processes, Ltd., and other concerns. IS FORD EXTENSION BLOCKED?

I T was the Government's policy to encourage industrial expansion as far away as possible from the overcrowded Greater London area, said Mr. J. Jones, on behalf of the Minister of Supply, in the House of Commons last week. Subject to this consideration, and to the need for -restricting capital investment. everything possible was being done by the Ministry to help the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., to carry out its plans at Dagenham.

This reply was given in answer to Capt. Crowder, who wished to know why Mr. Henry Ford had been refused permission to extend and modernize the Dagenham factory.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE INSTITUTE OF METALS THE annual general meeting of the HE

of Metals will be a threeday affair, commencing on March 16 and covering papers and visits. The centre will be the Institution of Civil Engineers, Great George Street, London, S.W.I. Papers will be read each day, whilst a choice of works to be visited is given for the afternoon of March 18. For members the list includes the Aluminium Plant and. Vessel Co., Ltd., Wandsworth; Enfield Cables, Ltd., and Enfield Rolling Mills. Ltd., Brimsdown; High Duty Alloys, Ltd., Slough; Murex, Ltd., Rainham; Murex Welding Processes, Ltd.. Waltham Cross; J. TYRE RETREADING CAPACITY DOUBLED

THE silver jubilee of Ondura, Ltd., the well-known Yorkshire concern of tyre remoulders, has been marked by extensions, as a result of which the company's factories now cover an area of more than 60,00,0 sq. ft., and productive capacity is more than doubled.

Production was recently starred at a three-storey factory, which the company acquired last year, at Harding,: Lane, Keighley. A new bay has also been added to the Ondura factory at Hirst Wood, Saltaire, Shipley. These developments will not only meet immediate needs, but also provide for business growth in future years. The Saltaire factory is concentrating ort remoulding of 'commercial-vehicle and tractor tyres.

OIL COMPANIES LIKE LEYLANDS QINCE the end of the war, oil companies have placed with Leyland Motors, Ltd., orders for vehicles valued at about £2,000,000. Although the greater proportion is for heavy-duty Beaver and Hippo models with 125 b.h.p. oil engines, nearly 500 are for the new Comet. Many of the Comets will be equipped with 1.000-gallon or 1,500-gallon tanks.

EXHIBITION DATE CHANGED

ORIGINALLY intended to be held from March 10-24, the Engineering and Industrial Equipment (Home and Export) Exhibition will now take place at the Royal Horticultural Hall, Vincent Square, Westminster, S.W.], from May 19-28. By that time a range of new products will be available.
