Need Recognition

THERE is no _doubt that in the future it will be more important than ever to have properly trained workers in the transport industry, and the institution of a satisfactory scheme of recognition will go far to stimulate the interest of workers in educational advantages," says the second annual report of the National Standing Joint Committee on Road Transport Education.

Stressing the importance of recognition by employers of employees' successes in examinations, the report points out that an investigation made in 1947 showed that about a third of employers make some contribution towards tuition or examination fees, and a number of organizations give prizes in respect of the Royal Society of Arts examinations. Most municipal undertakings award prizes' according to the N.A.L.G.O. scheme.

Some organizations, such as Luton Corporation, have a definite scheme of training in conjunction with the local education authorities. Others, such as Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., St. Helens Corporation, Edinburgh Corporation, Glasgow Corporation, Manchester Corporation and the London Transport Executive, have schemes of recognition and reward.

During 1947, 395 candidates, at 25 centres, entered for examinations, and submitted 918 papers. Of the candidates, 151, by far the greatest proportion, were drivers.

The committee comments that many students were keen and appeared to have extensive knowledge of their subjects, but could not express themselves clearly.

Local area committees have recently been set up in Bournemouth and Wolverhampton, and negotiations are proceeding in Birmingham and Lincoln.

Mr. R, W. Birch, M.I.Mech.E„ M.Inst.T., is chairman of the committee, and Major R. A. B. Smith, MC,, A.M.Inst.C.E., M.Inst.T vice-chairman.
