What will trucks look like in 10 years' time? Volvo's young designers offer some food for thought. CM goes back to the future.

Words: Brian WeatherLey

Here's a sobering thought. By the time a manufacturer launches a new truck, someone, somewhere, is already busy designing its successor.

So somewhat ironic that, days before Volvo is due to officially unveil its new FH, CM should be bringing you the Swedish truck maker's vision of 2018, rather than 2008.

While visiting the recent CV Show at the NEC in Birmingham, we couldn't help noticing a flurry of activity on the Volvo stand as operator visitors were given the chance to enjoy a glimpse of tomorrow's trucks.

There was the opportunity to comment on them too, thanks to a special presentation which was given by two young automotive designers.

Miles Waterhouse exhibited a number of drawings of futuristic HGVs while his colleague James Dex provided an animated view. Both are former students of the worldrenowned Coventry Transport Design course and have worked in the Volvo Trucks design centre in Gothenburg.

We were particularly taken by Waterhouse's creations and wondered if he would supply us with some examples. Within seconds, he'd downloaded this selection for us on a handy memory stick to take away. So sit back and enjoy we give you the future.
