Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NORFOLK COUNTY Council has given the green light for Foulger Transport vehicles to use a bus lane in Norwich.

The council has made this move in order to encourage retailers to make use of the company's consolidation centre.

The trial scheme means vehicles operated by the Norfolk haulage company can use the bus and cycle lane on the Al 1 during busy periods.

The firm has struggled to attract business from Norwich-based retailers for its centre, mainly due to the cost of the service ('Foulger set for more business in Norwich'. CM 15 May).

The proposal was opposed by the city council and from cycle campaigners, who think it will cause accidents. However, members of the Norwich Highways Agency Joint Committee agreed last week to the trial going ahead.

A county council spokesman says: "It makes sense to encourage people to use the consolidation centre.

"There will be one lorry a day using it, but that might go up to five.

"Lorries are of a very similar size to a bus, and there are 30 buses a day using it at the moment:'it will be a marginal difference.

"Hopefully it [the consolidation centre] will help take some freight off the road."

Progress will be reviewed following a sixmonth period.

Foulger Transport was unavailable for comment as CM closed for press.
