is Mr. M. C. L McGrath, of Fennhurst, nr. Hastemere, Surrey. His idea concerns the assembly of Girling 5 in. and 6 in. brake shoes fitted to Dodge, Commer, B.M.C. and other commercial vehicles. He says that the tappet and push-rod assemblies mounted in the twin webs of the brake shots are difficult to retain in their correct position during assembly—even more so if the hub is not removed.
Mr. McGrath's answer is to loop two elastic bands together, secure one end to the tappet locking split pin and pass the band over the lining on to the other tappet split pin, making sure that both ends are clear of -the tappet heads. Leave off the two outer springs and assemble the shoes.
The elastic bands can be easily severed and the front springs can be fitted with the help of a screwdriver with
a blade about Fin. wide. Locate th on the spring post and slide the sprit down its shaft on to the post, The hardest part of the job, says M McGrath, is to scrounge the rubb bands!
