• A first prize of £50, plus a weekend for two in London, went to 31-year-old Geoffrey Dodson, of Boston, Lincs., when he was last Saturday adjudged Member of the Year in a competition organized by the Perkins Drivers Club. A married man, Mr. Dodson is employed by the meat carrying firm of B. Platt and he is a regular night driver on the Boston to Smithfield market run.

Aker lunch at the company's Peterborough factory contestants were taken by coach to the Crowland farm of Mr. J,. W. E. Banks, who has himself had many years of motor competition experience, including 10 Tulip rallies and nine Monte Carlos.

The entry consisted of nine commercial vehicle drivers, two light van drivers, three tractor exponents and two fork-lift truck operators. The latter had a separate contest between themselves; the others were required to negotiate a series of hazards involving sharp turns, reversing and width gauging tests, all against a stop watch. There was also a questionnaire test.

None of the six hazards was easy and no driver succeeded in making a clear round. The winner actually tied on points-92 out of 100-with self-employed haulier Bill Johnstone from Annan, Dumfrieshire. Mr. Dodson's time of 3min 48see was, however, 16see quicker. Mr. Johnstone's prize was £25. Third man-prize £10, 89 points scored-was LDOY expert Chris O'Reilly, who drives for Petrona Ltd. from its Leeds base.
