Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Paul Brockington • No fewer than eight Shell-Mex and BP tankers were withdrawn from Sunday's Northampton eliminating contest, out of a total of 15 competing vehicles, to cope with rail dispute emergencies. It is the more creditable therefore that a company driver, B. Tromans, scored the lowest penalty points (76) in the run-off for the centre championship-at the wheel of three different vehicles after winning Class F2 with the loss of 66 points.

Shell-Mex and BP came second, with a total of 275 points, to Schweppes (Horne) Ltd. (179 points) in the team event and third to the local haulage contractor F. W. Wreford who lost 279 points. Wreford had the distinction of scoring a decisive 1, 2. 3, victory in Class El and it is noteworthy. that W. Wreford won the event (for the family) with the remarkably low penalty total of 50 at the Wheel of a Leyland. Although J. Culshaw of the Schweppes team scored the lowest penalty points of the day of 49 with a Bedford in Class C, Wreford's win was possibly the more outstanding performance. A Class El type orBedford van was lent by Wreford to the organizers for the bay test in the local championship event, while C. Butt Ltd. obliged with a C class Bedford tipper for the kerb test and Colour Services Ltd. lent an Albion Class B tanker for the width-judging test, which aroused little interest amongst drivers or spectators. Few of the leading drivers lost more than six or seven points in this test and a marshal complained that the speed at which it was sometimes performed made it very difficult to take accurate reading of the marker plates.

Mr. E. H. Cooper, county road safety officer, and Mr. J. York, of Arthur Mulliner Ltd., are to be congratulated on their excellent minute-by-minute commentary on the event. And also to be congratulated is the member of the Northampton and County Mobile Special Constabulary who disguised himself as a milk and orange juice vendor the better to observe competitors during the route test. It is reported that he could have had a roaring trade!
