THE recent London -1 ransport fare
increases for its stage carriage services were approved by the Transport Tribunal last week. The Tribunal also gave approval to the principle of London Transport recovering by way of increased fares the tolls paid .in respect of using the Dartford Tunnel.
The Tribunal made it clear that while it recognized that London Transport's policy was not to make each of its routes self-supporting, there was a difference in principle between working expenses in general and these tolls, which were authorized by statute in respect of distinct and specific journeys. The Tribunal's opinion was that such tolls could Properly be recovered from the passengers whose carriage had made them payable by London Transport.
In respect of the actual amount of toll payable by each passenger, the Tribunal could not predict this with any certainty and would not fix any maximum charges. But it did authorize the making of such charges as "may be reasonable" and provided for any question as to reasonableness being determined by itself under S.45 (3)(b) of the Act of 1962.
