Mr. Fred Webster, managing director of Smith's, said his company offered a choice of .12 Continental tours throughout. the season. Already in 1957 they had carried 1,556 passengers, averaging 37 per coach, and an additional 3,868 were .already booked. Of these already carried, 41 were from Morecambe and 19 from Lancaster. Their business had been built up by advertising, and they had inure than 500 agents.

Harrison's 15-day Rome tour was offered at £45, compared with £65 for 16 days with Smith's. These sporadic operations, starting on a semiprivate party basis, could pay off if the coach was filled, whilst the regular operator could not average more than two-thirds loading.
Mr. F. Williamson, chairman, said the application was almost identical with one made in January. The evidence was no stronger now but the opposition was. Need had not been proved and the application must be refused.
