A'application by Lansdowne Motors, Ltd., Fleetwood, to change the originating point of an excursion licence • was described at Blackpool. last week, as a most ingenious attempt to turn the 1930 Act into a rubber-stamp procedure.

The company asked the North Western Traffic Comniissioners for permission to start excursions at the Pavilion Garage, Victoria Road, Cleveleys, instead of The Arcade, Victoria Road.

Mr. E. A. Whitehead, for the objectors. J. Abbott and Sons (Blackpool), Ltd., said that the applicants had bought another company's originating point and were now asking to be licensed for it, thus obtaining the goodwill of the business.

The land was purchased by the applicants in April for use as a coach station, said Mr. H. Backhouse. It had been vacant for the previous two seasons, and one of the reasons for the application was that the local authority were seeking compulsorily to acquire their present premises for a car park.

Mr. J. Abbott. managing director of the objectors, said the Pavilion Garage was originally his own company's stand from 1936 to 1948. After trouble with the owner, they bought land off the main road near by and were granted permission to move their originating point there.

If Lansdowne were allowed to go there they could straddle Abbott's position by operating both stands, and cause serious abstraction. There was no real evidence of need for the change as the threat of compulsory acquisition was not immediate.

Mr. Backhousc pointed out that the applicants had paid £10,000 for the land, and it was now vital that they used it as a stand.

Abbott's most accept the position that they would not be able to use the Pavilion Garage, said the chairman, Mr. F. Williamson, but they would reserve decision until they had found and applied for a new originating point. The best solution would be for the parties to get together and allow Abbott's the use of it until that time.
