WVALSALL Corporation has been VV running motorbuses for 20 years, and the past year's operations, to March 31, 1935, were conducted at a gross profit of £43,817, income having totalled £177,811 and working expenses £133,994. After deducting income tax, interest, depreciation, and sinking-fund charges, the net balance amounts to £17,224.

At the end of March last, the motorbuses were serving a route mileage of 210, and during the year under review the vehicles covered a total mileage of 3,414,630 and carried 22,969,377 passengers. The number of motorbuses in service is 104, the fleet being mainly composed of vehicles of Dennis make, many of them double-deckers.

The corporation also operates trolleybuses over a route mileage of Over 200 of the vehicles are of Leyland make, some of them being oilengined, with the company's torque converter.

5,800 COACHES AT ALDERSHOT.

THE road traffic to the Aldershot Tattoo, which was handled at the arena by the Royal Automobile Club, this year constituted a record; 5,800 coaches were parked in the official enclosures.

DONCASTER APPEAL SUCCEEDS.

THE Minister of Transport has announced his decision on the appeal of Doncaster Rural District Council, against fare conditions on licences granted to H. Wilson, Ltd., W. Smith, and T. Severn and Sons, Ltd,, for services between Thorne Moorends and Doncaster. It was represented that the single fare between Fdenthorpe post office and Doncaster should be RIBBLE TRAFFIC INCREASED 40 TIMES THE striking growth of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., was emphasized by Mr. W. S. Wreathall, the chairman, at the company's 16th

general meeting. The concern was established in 1919, and in the year 1921-22 carried 2,000,000 passengers, hut during 1934-35 the enonmons figure of 80,000,000 passengers was reached.

For the first time in its history the company paid over £500,000 in wages and national insurance. Taxation absorbed £217,365, or about 17iper cent. of the total revenue.

Dealing with the extension of the 'company's -activities, Mr. Wreathall pointed out that by the acquisition of interests in local concerns and the purchase of competing businesses, the company now had a large share of the bus and excursion traffic to and from Blackpool. In partnership with 10, and during the past municipal year these vehicles were operated at a gross profit of £15,607, income having totalled £43,874 and working expenses £28,267, the net balance, after deducting interest, income tax and sinking-fund charges, amounting to £8,769.

During the year the trolleybuses covered a net mileage of 632,841, and carried 6,859,965 passengers. The corporation operates a fleet of 19 trolleybuses, all 60-seaters, mainly of Sunbeam make.

GOOD SURPLUS AT SHEFFIELD.

DURING the year ended March 31, 1935, the total income derived by Sheffield Corporation from its buses was £295,326, and as working expenses amounted to £246,143, there was a gross profit for the year of £49,183. Interest and repayment of debt charges reduced the balance to £44,460, and after deducting an appropriation of £30,685 for the renewals fund, and an item of £237 for interest on a special reserve fund, the net surplus for the year comes out at £13,538, which is transferred to the special reserve fund.

At the end of March last, the' corporation possessed 231 buses, including those operated by the joint committee. B40 reduced from Sid. to 3d., and that the return fare between the two points should be 5d., and should be available all day.

The appeal failed on the question of a reduction on the single fare, but the Minister was of the opinion that a case. had been made out for the return fare.

"EASTERN COUNTIES" TO TAKE OVER FIVE MORE SERVICES?

THE Eastern Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., has applied to the Eastern Traffic Commissioners for permission to take over five services in the Peterborough district previously operated by Mr. E. Shaw. The services are operated between Peterborough and Tollington, Market Deeping, Bourne and Stamford, and between Maxey and Stamford.

£20,000 PROFIT AT OLDHAM. •

XCELLENT results are shown in L. the past year's report of Mr. J. F. Richards, Oldham Corporation's traniport manager. The undertaking worked at a net profit of £20,092, consisting of a surplus of £8,734 on the tramcars and £11,358 on the motorbuses. The working expenses amounted to £199,404. The transport department made a contribution of £10000 to the rates and £5,000 in aid of unemployment relief.

During the year the corporation purchased six single-deck and double saloon oil-engined buses, • £116,000 PAID IN TAXATION.

CONSIDERABLE expansion of the ‘....company's activities was reported at the 24th annual meeting of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., when the chairman, Col. H. I.

Robinson, presided. He said that during the past year the company paid £116,038 in taxation, representing 17 per cent, of the total revenue.
