Among the orders for motor vehicles given out by Government Departments during May last was one for Albion chassis placed by the War Department. The Air Ministry gave an order for tractors and trailers to Tractors (London), Ltd. The G.P.O. authorities placed orders for Albion, Morris-Cominercial and Morris chassis, and Chas, Roberts, Duple, -Perry and Ransomes bodies. The Crown Agents for the Colonies gave orders for lorry chassis to the Albion, Blackstone, Morris Industries Exports and Vauxhall concerns, one for •A.E.C. tractors and another for Dyson trailers.

Operators Visit Maker's Works.

A few days ago a number of important road-transport operators in Worcester visited the Morris-Com:tier-. civil works at Adderley Park, Birmingham, the party being organized by the

manufacturer's distributors in the city, Messrs. W. L. Cotton, After making a tour of the works, the VisitorS were entertained to luncheon, at which Mr. W. G. Graham, the company's general sales manager, said that the cold hand of restrictive legislation was upon them, and that it was for the industry to oppose further restriction by speaking with a united' voice; he thought that this could best be done by operators linking sip with an association.

Quick Bunkering with a Moving Floor.

An accompanying illustration shows a load of crushed ice being discharged from a trailer into a ship's hold. The vehicle is one of six Crane trailers equipped with bodies and moving floors made and installed by the Principality Wagon Co., Ltd., Cardiff, and recently supplied to the North of Scotland Coaling Co., Ltd., Aberdeen.

They are normally used for carrying coal and ice, having a capacity for 15 tons of the former, and where coalbunkering operations formerly occupied some hours, neeessitating. the manhandling of the fuel in sacks, now the 15 tons are discharged, by means of the Principality moving floor and chute attachment, in no more than four minutes. If it be not possible to shoot the load direct into the hold, a conveyor is used.

The Crane trailers are eightwheelers of the rocking-half-axle type; they were described in our issue dated January 11 last.

Piston-manufacturing Arrangement.

To assist in meeting the increasing demand for Arcaloy pistons, the Laystall Motor Engineering Works, Ltd., Ewer Street, London, S.E.1, has granted rights to Alloy Pistons, Ltd., 56, Rochester Place, London, N.W.1, to manufacture these pistons under licence. Incidentally, the prices of Arcaloy pistons have been substantially reduced as from July 1.

Ruston and Hornsby Capital Reduction.

We learn that on Monday last the sanction of the Court was received by Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., to a scheme whereby the capital will be reduced and the arrears of dividend on the preference shares cancelled.

Licensing Authority Complains of Expense of Prosecutions.

The South Wales Licensing Authority is calling attention to the expense entailed in prosecutions for failure to comply with the regulations and licence -conditions. The solidi:07-appealing for the Authority in cases heard at Barry stated that the Authority was becoming concerned about the number of prosecutions Which he had to institute' for failure to take out licences, and he asked magistrates to view the cases more seriously.

Most of the defendants had failed to obtain C licences and pleaded ignorance of the law. M. L. H. Harrington, A.M.I.A.E., who has been manager of Garner Motors, Ltd., London service depot, for the past nine years, has recently joined John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., as manager of its Metropolitan Area service depot. Mr. Harrington took over his new duties on July I.

The many friends of Major S. A. Currin will be interested to learn that, on August 1, he is joining the board of Simms Motor Units, Ltd., as sales director, with complete charge of the sales organization and of 14 provincial .depots, He is being accompanied on the board by Mr. Vincent Jobson, chairman and managing director of Qualcast, Ltd., of Derby, chairman of Aga Heat, Ltd., and director of Peacock's Stores.

Major Currin has been a member Of the Institution of Automobile Engineers since 1910, and is a council member of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. He has done much work on several technical sub-committees, and is on the main Research and Standardization Committee of the I.A.E. His experience with the motor trade dates back to 1903, when he was connected with the Wilson Pikher car. His work with the Clayton Dewandre Co., Ltd., is well known, and it is in great part due to him that the Dewandre servo is standard equipment on a great many British commercial vehicles using power brakes. In his new position he will devote his energies mainly to the development and marketing of the Simms fuel pump for oil engines, and lighting and starting sets.
