NEWS IN BRIEF

• Royal Mail has spent £70m on 8,500 delivery vans as part of its modernisation strategy. The operator says the vehicles, a combination of Peugeot Bippers and Vauxhall Combos, will allow longer, more flexible delivery routes to manage a growth in packet volumes. A further 7,500 car-derived vans (mainly Combos) will also be added to the fleet.

• A free national freight crime conference is taking place on 31 January at the University of Central Lancashire, which aims to examine the effect of crime on the haulage industry. To book your place, contact 01772 894178 or visit http:// bit.ly/uX9723
