SPONSORSHIP of social activities by members of the motor and transport industries tends to be directed towards sport. Lord Gowrie, Minister for the Arts, is, however, trying to persuade more companies to .invest in culture. Whether the country and western and pop festival at Peterborough sponsored annually by Mercedes-Benz could be regarded as art I would not like to say. • Any new sponsor of the arts who puts up more than £7,500 will attract a Government grant of a third out of a budget of £500,000, to be increased to £1m a year from April 1 next. Who will be the first public cleansing contractor to sponsor an evening of Tibetan poetry reading at the Albert Hall?
