GRANNING Suspensions (UK) has produced a prototype rearaxle air suspension unit for light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gvw. The new system has been designed to give improved ride and handling characteristics, and is intended for ambulances, passenger vehicles and operators carrying delicate loads.

The suspension comprises a box-section trailing arm with a rear-mounted Firestone adjustable-height air bag which, according to Granning, will offer the same maximum load rating as conventional leaf spring units fitted to existing light vehicles. Air is produced by a small 12V electro-pneumatic compressor mounted in the engine compartment feeding a 10-litre capacity air reservoir tank.

Used in conjunction with a demount body system, the Granning air suspension allows the vehicle's chassis to be raised or lowered by up to 203mm (8in).

Although still in the development stage, Granning is in discussion with Renault and Ford about supplying light vehicle air suspension units as original equipment.

Granning has designed the light cv air suspension to be capable of retro-fitment by operators without the need for any major chassis alterations likely to invalidate vehicle warranties. Operators will also be able to remove the unit prior to a vehicle's sale, returning it to its original condition.

Granning estimates the cost of suspension unit will be around £750, with a fitting time of approximately half a day.
