UNITED TRANSPORT COMPANY personnel and training officer Oliver Johns has taken early retirement. David Mitchell has taken up the new post of personnel manager responsible for UTC's British and European interests.

Mr Johns joined United Transport in 1966 having previously worked for Showerings and the London Brick Company. Apart from a short period as regional manager, South West, of the Road Transport Industry Training Board, he has worked continuously with United Transport — first with the BUT group when he set up its training centre in Chippen ham.

In 1981 Mr Johns's responsibilities were extended to include involvement in recruiting campaigns in Britain for UTO staff in East and Southern Africa. In addition, he served for 10 years as a director of Stamp OFT) and for 13 years on purchasing liaison committee of the parent group, British Electrical Traction.

David Mitchell, who will take on the work previously done by Oliver Johns, will advise senior management on personnel policy for companies in the UK and Europe. He joined Smith of Maddiston (now part of United Transport Distribution) as personnel manager in 1973 after having worked in personnel and training in heavy industry and shipping.

Aside from the United Transport Company Mr Mitchell has been a member since 1979 of the Scottish Joint Industrial Council for the transport industry, is a director of the Stirling and Falkirk Employers Transport Group, and is a director of the Glasgow Eastern Area Information Technology Centre.
