Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A 4600ga1 wet-waste articulated vacuum tanker was recently completed by Fusion (Bickenhill) Ltd, Ravenshaw Lane, Solihull, Warwicks, for Progressive Waste Disposal Ltd, of Birkenhead; it is claimed to have a higher capacity than any vacuum tanker built in this country. Made of din. mild steel, the tank has a length of 3311 and is mounted on an Overlander 32-ton-gross semi-trailer that will be hauled by an Atkinson tractive unit; the payload of the outfit is approximately 20.5 tons.

The exhauster /compressor power pack is mounted on the side of the tank and comprises two modified Hammond rotary-vane units driven by a Lister 22 bhp diesel engine. Modifications include a lubrication system by which oil is drawn into the system by vacuum. And, of special note, the units are located in a tunnel through which cooling air is blown by a 14in. fan.

The pack produces 30in. of vacuum or 15 in. of pressure. Fluids that may be carried in the tanker on regular runs include sewage, ink, spent acids, cement, washings, suds, oils and lubricants.

Four baffles are employed to control surge and to increase the strength of the tank. Twinned change-over valves are included in the equipment, and in the event of failure of one of the exhauster /compressor units, the other unit could be used alone. With both units working, the pack has a capacity of 240 cu ft/min and the tank can be filled in 12min.

A technician of the company points out that the carriage of dangerous wastes is increasingly necessitating long hauls to approved dumping points and that transport economy depends on making the best use of maximum-load tankers. Future plans include the production of frameless vacuum tankers.

Above right: made of 4, in. mild steel this Fusion 4600ga1 wet-waste tanker is mounted on an Overlander 32-ton-gross semi-trailer and will he hauled by an Atkinson tractive unit. The payload is about 20.5 tons.

Right: an eight-bladed 191n. diameter fan is employed to cool the two Hammond exhauster/ compressor units that are mounted in tandem In a tunnel and driven by a Lister 22 bhp diesel.
