• Despite a significantly higher income in the financial year ended March 31 last, Newport Corporation transport department made a considerably higher deficit than in the previous year. The figure for last year was /86,804, compared with only £59,653 for the previous year.
The last financial year did not benefit from Newport's adoption of a flat-fare system which only came into operation on February 20. Although passengers carried fell from 27,684,000 to 26,403,000 mileage operated rose from 2,585,051 to 2,672,100.
