CHANGE OF BUS STANCES IN GLASGOW.

Details of the New By-laws and the Location of the Stances for Vehicles Serving Different Districts.

JUDGIVIENT confirming the Glasgow magistrates' new by-law for bus traffic in the city was issued on December 18th, with the exception of one bylaw relating to the limiting of hours during which buses may ply within the city boundaries. This decision means, that the Cathedral Street stance, which has for so long been the starting point for almost all buses, will now be reserved for those which serve the eastern and north-eastern districts, Renfrew Street being the stand for buses going "west, and Carlton Place for those serving the south.

. With reference to the objections to the Carlton Place stance the Sheriff (Mr. A. 0. M. McKenzie) stated that as it was clear, that some change would have to be made in the present arrangement, and as the police had received numerous complaints regarding the congestion in Cathedral Street, he was inclined to endorse the contention of the magistrates' committee that, in fixing stances, it was entitled to take into account the general problem of traffic in the central streets. It had not attempted in the by-laws to exclude stage coaches from the central streets of the city, and it had no power to do anything of the kind. The objectors had not satisfied him that suitable stances for omnibuses plying from the south were available in the central portion of the city or in streets to the north of the central portions.

The Sheriff sympathized to some ex

tent with the objectors, who feared that the shifting of the stances for their buses from Cathedral Street to south of the river • would put them in a less favourable position as competitors with the railway companies. He thought it possible that the members of the public whom they serve might not find this new arrangement so convenient, but in the absence, however, of evidence to show that suitable and equally convenient stances could be found elsewhere, he was linable to sustain the objections.

With regard to the objection by the

Lanarkshire Tramways Co. that the fixing of these stances is £m undue restriction of the power they have by a Provisional Order to run buses into Glasgow for a distance considerably beyond the stand fixed for their vehicles, the Sheriff holds that that right is exercisable subject to such by-laws as the magistrates are empowered to make. As had already been shown, the fudng of the stanees does not prohibit the company from running their buses beyond the places where the stances are situated ; therefore the objection fails.

The Sheriff stated that if the objection by the proprietors of the nursing homes to the Renfrew Street stance should turn out to be well founded their proper remedy would be to apply to the Ministry of Transport, or to the magistrates, for reconsideration.
