Driver took inflammable load on ferry

A POLISH driver who boarded a cross-Channel ferry and failed to declare dangerous goods has been fined £2,000.

Janusz Gauden was also ordered to pay £3,757.98 in costs after pleading guilty at Folkestone Magistrates court last week.

In November Gauden boarded a SeaFrance ferry in Calais with 228 people on board. His truck was carrying 338kg of methyl methacrylate monomer. stabilised, which he intended to take through Dover.

Half way through the voyage SeaFrance staff were informed that Gau den had earlier tried to board another vessel at Dunkirk, but had been refused because he did not have the correct dangerous goods documentation.

Gauden was arrested as he left the vessel at Dover on 20 November. He was later charged with contravening the Merchant Shipping (Dangerous Goods and Marine Pollutants) Regulations 1997 He was bailed to return to court last week.

I be chairman of the magistrates said: "You are an experienced driver and did a deliberate act. You endangered the crew and everyone on board and the potential for disaster was driven by monetary reasons."

Keith Bradley, hazardous cargo adviser for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, says: "Methyl methacrylate monomer is inflammable and if subject to heating, such as in a fire, the product can become explosive and cause toxic fumes"
