Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Fly tippers are wasters Many people who buy elderly trailers from auctions or dealers are simply being prudent with their pennies. But that's not always the motivation, according to the Environment Agency.

It's becoming increasingly concerned about the growing number of old trailers that are being bought so that they can be filled with waste products like worn-out tyres and dumped illegally, complete with their contents. As a result the cost of disposing of the waste— which on occasions has included clinical waste— falls on the taxpayer.

"Trailer chassis numbers and other identification marks are removed, making it difficult to trace the last owner," says agency enforcement officer John Parish. "We've carried out a lot of investigations, but as yet we've not got enough evidence to mount a prosecution."

Anybody with any information on illegally dumped trailers and waste should ring 0800 807060. Parish says: Any tip-offs will be greatly appreciated."
