IVECO AND EATON are aiming to start producing a joint range of medium and light duty transmissions for European and world markets from 1985, with costs split equally between the two partners.
The two companies agreed in principle to the project around 18 months ago, and they propose to develop a new family of single countershaft, synchromesh gearboxes with torque ratings from 407Nm (300 lbft) to 814Nm (600 Ibft) and five to nine speeds.
There is as yet no legally binding agreement between the two companies, according to Eaton, but the first of the new gearboxes is expected to be built in 1985, with full production starting a year later.
In both cases, underused factories will be used to build the range. Ivaco will probably use its Brescia plant, and Eaton its Basingstoke plant.
The new gearboxes will compete with those available from ZF, Dana, and from in house-manufactured components.
