BRITONS obviously like a kick to their custard, because between autumn and early spring, Erven Warnink, of Rotterdam, will export more than 200,000 cases of advocaat to this country. This traditional Dutch liqueur, made with egg yolks, sugar and alcohol, derives its name from the legal advocates who drank it to clear their throats if not their heads.
Seventy-two cases are stacked on a pallet and 15 pallets fit neatly into a 30ft container. About 70 per cent of Warnink's exports come to the United Kingdom and by spring, Geest North Sea Line will have shipped some 40,000 cases. This service is backed by road haulage to wholesalers all over the country.
Spare a thought, too, for those who deliver the 325,000 eggs that Warnink — a smashing firm if ever there was one — breaks every day.
