LEYLAND will have a 6x2 twin steer chassis for 38 tonne operation by the end of the year according to UK operations director Robin Woolcock.

Speaking at the 38 tonne workshop organised by CM and Leyland Vehicles (see p18), Mr Woolcock said that the vehicle will be a twin-steer chassis with a close-coupled bogie and will have a kerb weight of 7.5 tonnes.

This weight is for a specification which includes a sleeper cab, Cummins 350 engine, and existing Roadtrain driveline as well as a full (100 gal) tank of fuel and fifth wheel plus ramps.

Initial calculations would suggest that a day cab version with a Rolls-Royce 265L power unit will weight around 7.2 tonnes.

Because of the relatively small production levels for such a chassis it is likely that it will be built at Scammell's Watford factory.
