• In an attempt to retain unremunerative )us services Durham County Council and ive local authorities within the county edged objections to an application made by United Automobile Services Ltd to renew 18 road service licences in Darlington last week.
The councils contended that these icences should not be renewed unless :inked continued to operate unremunerative ;ervices by subsidizing them from the rperation of profitable services. United has ntimated that unless subsidies totalling :22,000 a year are forthcoming it will be 'orced to withdraw certain unremunerative .ural services.
Mr S. Stephenson, representing Durham X, told Mr J. A. T. Hanlon, the chairman
of the Northern Traffic Commissioners, that it would cost only id on each 6s Id fare to maintain the unviable services.
United operates 327 services throughout the area. of which 182 do not pay their way. Representing United, Mr L. Croft said that the company was seeking support on 58 of the unremunerative services. Of four county councils, Northumberland, Durham and the North and West Ridings of Yorkshire, asked to provide subsidies, only Durham had refused.
Mr Hanlon adjourned the hearing to give the councils and the company time to hold discussions with a view to reaching agreement. Failing this, the bearing will be resumed at some future date.
