Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AT MANCHESTER.—Albion—Allchin—Sentinel—Argyll.

Albion. Stand No. Ii.

Visitors who have not already done so should make certain of paying a visit to the Albion stand. Here they will find a 15 h.p. box

van, a 24 h.p. char-k-banes, and a 32 h.p. Albion engine unit. The char-a-bancs being the latest pro duct is of particular interest. It has a very fine and roomy torpedo body, well upholstered in green leather, with panels painted choco late. This vehicle is fitted with a three-speed gearbox ; the final transmission is by chain drive. The brakes are Ferodo lined. A model was exhibited at Olympia. in July last. The cylinder dimensions are 4 in. bore and 5A in. stroke, the horse-power normally developed being 25. The body is by Crawfords, of Manchester. The box van is eminently suitable for bulky light goods ; it is fitted with, as before mentioned, a 15 h.p. engine. The model is built to carry loads up to 15 cwt. For 20 cwt. loads the same chassis suitably strengthened is used. The springing is particularly good on both machines. The driver is very well protected, and the control levers, situated inside the body, are most get-atable. The larger box-vans can be fitted with solid tires on the rear wheels if required. One of the most interesting exhibits on the stand is the Albion 32 h.p. engine.

Allchin. Stand No. 5.

A standard five-tonner of this company's manufacture is here staged. It has all the characteristic features of the now generallyaccepted loco-type steam wagon. This model is a ready and powerful steamer, and should snake an appeal to many Lancashire users who have heavy loads to haul over roads which more often than not have none-too-good surfaces. The example shown on Stand N. 2 is a delivery to Messrs. F. Dawson and Son, of Sheffield. Visitors will be interested to note the provision on this model of the Cary open-leaf axle springs. Another feature of interest is the method of pivoting the main frame members to the smokebox. The body is a good

strong example of the platform type with hinged sides. Visitors can inspect on this machine the ingenious trigger-action drawbar coupling, an example of which is fitted to the back frame member of this exhibit.

Alley and MacLellan. Stand No. 52.

One of the examples of new models to make its first appearance at this Show is the new 3-4 ton Alley and MacLellan. At first sight this machine does not appear, other than in its general overall dimensions, to differ much from the Sentinel wagon with which we have all become so familiar. As a mat.ter of fact, the designers have kept very closely to the arrangement of the well-tried larger model, and the new three-tonner corresponds very closely indeed to it. The example staged is for James Briggs and Sons, Ltd„ of the Ribble Flour Mills, Preston. It is almost unnecessary for us once again to catalogue the special features of Sen

tinel steam-wagon construction, but we would draw the attention of visitors who are unfamiliar with this maker's products to the use of a vertical boiler with superheater coils, and of a two-cylinder simple engine slung beneath the frame, with a single-chain final drive to the live back axle.

Argyll. Stand No. 10.

A complete two-ton model and a one-ton chassis comprise the Argyll exhibit. The machine ready for the road is fitted with a lorry-type body made in the Alexandria works, which is a fine example of industrial coachwork. The engine develops 15 .h.p. on the brake and is fitted with interchangeable poppet valves provided with adjustable tappets. The Zenith carburetter finds favour with this constructor. A multipledisc clutch transmits the engine power to the three-speed gearbox,

and the propeller shaft connects up the drive to n worm axle, the worm unit being placed on top. The road. springs are shackled at both ends, and all pins are supplied with greasers. The larger model, the two-ton chassis example, has for its power unit a 20 lop. engine. The cylinders are cast in pairs, and the mushroom type of valve is adopted. Thermo-svphonic water circulation effects the cooling of the engine. This model is also fitted with a multiple-disc clutch, and the threespeed gearbox and the engine arc mounted on a sub-frame and accurate alignment is assured during erection. The propeller shaft transmits the drive to a worm type of axle, and on this model also the worm is placed on top. A torque member has its front end anchored by a ball joint fitted between heavy coil springs.

Austin. Stand No. 25.

The two exhibits on this stand typify the Austin policy with regard to the marketing of machines for the business side . of the industry. There is shown a 2-e3-ton lorry chassis, and an exceedingly fine example of motor ambulance. The originality of design. in the construction of the Austin lorry chassis will at once favourably impress the visitor. The main object of this manufacturer has been to market an industriai model which shall afford a very low loading line, so that the machme can be loaded

and unloaded with the minimum of exertion. To meet this, the engine is inclined towards the rear of the chassis in order to line up with a special form of gear set and differential disposed under the driver's seat, and separate propeller shafts transmit the power directly to a set of bevel gears disposed on the inside of each road wheel. The whole of the power unit can readily be slid forward out of the chassis for replacement or repair. The underslung axle and the latticed girder frame, together with the duplex semi-elliptic springs, all go to show the considerable amount of forethought which has been devoted to the model. The fine ambulance which is staged is provided with two stretchers ; there is room for two attendants inside the vehicle, in addition to a passenger beside the driver.

Belsize. Stand No. 16.

The five models staged by Belie Motors, Ltd., testify to the allround productive capabilities of the company. The largest goods-carrying model is a wagon capable of accommodating a useful load of three tons. This is fitted with a

16-24 h.p. engine, and the control gear is a very noticeable feature on account. of its substantial construction and the disposition of the various levers and pedals. This ma., chine is fitted with a flat. lorry-type body, and all road wheels are of the tubular east-steel type which are so much in favour at the present time. Placed alongside this is a smartlooking five-cwt. delivery van, with the body finished in natural wood.. The London type of taxicab, for which Belsize Motors, Ltd., has made such a name for itself, is, of course, inclueled. A four-seater and a two-seater are staged. The fifth exhibit is a very smart-looking char-A-banes. The body of , this affords easy access, a. point which is not being considered as much as it might be by some makers. • This model has cast tubular road wheels.

Berliet (Arnold). Stand No. 14.

Pour of these well known French-made cars are staged en Stand No. 14, and, of course, the French subsidy type manufactured by this company is included. The chassis is fitted with a 25 h.p. engine, a notable feature being the engine governor fitted with an auto

matie cut-out. This governor can be set and sealed to regulate any pre-determined number of revolutions. The gearbox and differential case on , this chain-driven model are designed. on the unit system, the side chain centres are kept short, and very stout brackets are provided for anchoring the sprockets and countershaft. The chassis is constructed to carry four-ton loads. The complete model shown is a three-ton machine. The engine is a 25 h.p. unit, and the final drive is by roller chains. A roomy body is mounted on the pressed-steel frame, fitted with drop sides to enable loading to be accomplished with facility. Both models are fitted with. twin solid tires at

the rear. The third exhibit is a van chassis fitted with a 15 h.p. engine. Cardan shaft and bevel transmission are feAtures of this model, and the propeller shaft is enclosed in a very substantial torque tube. This machine is well adapted for express-delivery work, and is mounted at the rear on twin Michelin tires. A :10-cwt. express delivery van completes this exhibit.
