Smith's Speedometers.

To the owners of commercial oars, speedometers and mileage recorders are practically an essential accessory ; consequently, during the past few years, there has been a large and constantly increasing demand for a reliable speed and mileage indicator suitable for business machines, S. Smith and Son, Ltd., 179-185, Great Portland Street; London, W., has for many years catered for this class of motor accessory, and the name " Speedometer House " is nu doubt well known to our readers.

Our illustration shows the concern's latest type of speedometer, which has been specially constructed for use on either rubber or steel tired machines. The dial is calibrated up to 30 miles per hoar; the case, in cast brass, is of strong construction, and it is impossible for any unauthorized person to tamper with the parts when once the equipment is fitted. The outfit can be supplied with or without a trip mileage recorder, as required.

Upon examination, it will be seen that there is a separate finger for indicating the maximum speed reached during any particular run, and, in order to release this indicator back to zero, a small push knob is located at the base of the instrument.

We have examined the gear-drive for these speedometers, and are. very favourably impressed by the sound constructional features.

The flexible inner and, outer cables used for the drive are specially strong and well made, and the whole equipment can be relied upon to stand up to enduous service. Bulk Storage of Benzoic and Petrol.

A good deal of general interest has been aroused quite recently in this question, and perhaps it will be well to draw attention to the conditions found desirable in one apparatus used for the purpose.

The apparatus must be sale, i.e., nee from loss of spirit anti therefore without risk of fire or explosion. 1 here must be no waste of spirit, and this must follow if the first condition be observed. The arrangements for filling the storage tanks and for distributing the spirit must be convenient and quick ; the storage tanks should be lifted under seal, and spirit distributed should be delivered direct to the vehicles and not carried about the garage in separate vessels, There should be correct means of measuring the spirit received into the storage tanks, and of spirit distributed so that accurate storekeeping may be carried out.

The Steel Barrel Co., Ltd., of Uxbridge, has been making storage and measuring tanks for the last seven years, .and' has evolved a system that is exceedingly good in every respect and very economical. The storage and measuring tanks made by this company are all welded. They are very strong and substantial, and of adequate thickness. They have never leaked,

we find. spirit is delivered into the storage tanks always under seal, either from the suppliers' road tank wagon. or from steel barrels ; proper arrangements are made in either case for efficiently transferring the spirit into the storage tanks. All the storage tanks are carefully measured, and steel dipping-rods, which accurately indicate the amount of spirit in or delivered into the storage tanks, are provided with each outfit sent out.

For distribution purposes, the spirit is quickly pumped (corn the storage tank of an installation into the measuring tank, and each of the latter tanks is stamped as a correct measure by the Weights and Measures Anthority of the Middlesex County Council. The scale which indicates the spirit distributed is very easily read, and no error of reading should be possible. The spirit itself is measured, which is an accurate method, and no wear and tear can affect this accuracy of measurement. The installation is exceedingly simple in its arrangement, and a careful cheek may readily be kept of all spirit taken out.

Small installations of 60 to '250 gallons storage capacity are made by the Steel Barrel Co., as well as large plants up to many thousands of gallons. Many scores of their plants are in use all over the United Kingdom, and no doubt the number will be largely increased now that more general attention is being drawn to storage in bulk. The workmanship and all the material in the apparatus mink by the Steel Barrel Co, are well reputed for high quality, and the company lays stress

on the fact that this is a British industry. Storage of petrol or benzole in bulk is undoubtedly economical, because it avoids waste and loss of spirit, facilitates distribution, is very economical in labour, is favoured by the fire insurance companies, and in many cases enables the-spirit to be purchased at a considerably lower mice in steel barrels or in road tank wagon, instead of in two-gallon cans. It is found to be necessary that the tanks should be galvanized inside and outside, to prevent rusting.
