by Bill Godwin • Korean manufacturer Daewoo is developing a new generation of heavy trucks. The range consists of 4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 cargo, tipper and mixer chassis with a 6x4 tractor for 38-tonne GCW operations.

The new model range may form part of Daewoo's planned European operations. At present the Korean company is relying on increased engineering input to Polish and Czechbuilt vehicles under six tonnes GVW, built by Daewoo owned or affiliated plants.

Features include a European-designed tilt cab and power ratings from 223hp (166kW) to 366hp (273kW) from the DE12, DE12Ti or DV15T engines—the DV15T is a vee-eight mated to a ZF 16S-151 16-speed synchromesh gearbox in 19-tonne GVW rigids and tractors.

Drive is taken through a re-designed propshaft with a four-bolt flange to a hypoid rear axle. Special attention has been given to a new rear-of-cab air intake and beefing up the exhaust system to ensure longer life.

The 15-tonner tipper chassis have the option of a self-locking dill for improved traction. Frame construction incorporates buck-bolt fasteners for side rails and cross-members. Overall chassis lengths range from 7.43m for the 15.5-tonner to 12.54m for the 8x4 which has a claimed chassis-cab weight of 12.39 tonnes with a long sleeper cab and a 10.1rn deck length.

The "Super" (sleeper cab) has a heated berth which measures 2.18m by 0.65m and an "airgun" coupler to tap the air brake supply for cleaning out the cab interior.

Climate control includes full air conditioning and heating. An air suspension driver's seat and electrically operated windows are also standard equipment with a "cornering lamp" to light up the road when turning.
